Hey Val what are your thoughts on these collagen powders that you put in water to drink? I never tried it, felt it shouldn’t work but wanted to see what you’ve heard??

C -- there's no evidence available, say the doctors I've read, that ingesting collagen has any effect on the skin. In fact, one skincare expert, a friend of a friend, told him, eat bacon instead. So there you have it. xo

Elizabeth --the studies so far have been inconclusive about whether collagen, when it's ingested, has any effect on your skin. But if you think you see a difference and you like it, I say, keep up the regimen. You could try stopping it for a while to see if the changes you noticed disappear. Thanks for sharing your experience here; I hope you'll continue to read and enjoy HNTFUYF. xo

What about collagen shakes, etc? Does swallowing it work?

Ann, I don't think there are any studies showing that ingesting collagen appreciably (or at all) increases collagen production in the skin. In other words, more flimflam at this point as far as I know.

Good to know that all the things I'm not doing wouldn't help anyway.

I'm eager to hear what the derms say about in-office lifting procedures. There are a lot of us in between the Fondas and McDormands of the world, realistic about aging but wanting to do a little something. Would you also write about how the alt-rock goddesses of the world are handling aging--like Kim Gordon (and she is NOT doing nothing about her face unless she has the best genes ever and maybe she does--I used to live near here and see her IRL, she looked so fierce and cool), Liz Phair (amazing!), Patti Smith. Even though heaven knows I've got not much in common with them (sadly? Would have been fun to be a rock goddess for a bit!), I find myself looking to them for inspiration when it comes to looking amazing at any age.

JM, those of us who want to do a little something are probably in the majority, which is why I asked the doctors about bang for the buck. II agree totally that it's not all or nothing necessarily, but I'm finding it sometimes a slippery slope (which is why I'll continue to refer you back to the facial exercise I wrote about). As for the rock goddesses, I'll check them out, since the only one I know is inimitable Patti, whose face is a ballad all its own. Thanks for your comment, and I hope you'll continue to read and enjoy HNTFUYF.

Val, you are a lifeboat come to rescue us! I admit to wincing when I glimpse myself in mirror and the light is bad. So unwise! You’ve arrived just in time.

Kathryn, everyone I spoke to about this (dermatologists, the founder of Dermaflash, and various women who've shaved their faces, all insist the hair does NOT grow back thicker. It may feel a little thicker because the hair, before you shave it, has been on your face for...well, a long time. I use the Tinkle blade a couple times a week on my upper lip (I only need to shave the sides) but the hair has not grown back in any differently. Maybe try it on a smallish spot first to reassure yourself. I totally understand your hesitancy. Also, I'm so glad you're enjoying the posts. I'm writing them with women like you in mind. xo
