As I counsel college students as a mental health counselor, it seems as though self-compassion (or what I describe as "stop being mean to yourself") is one of the hardest things for students to do for themselves. They can grasp the concept and often can do that for others but for themselves? Nearly impossible. Although I'm not a parent myself, I do wonder what we've done societally or culturally to these dear young people. Yet, I grew up not feeling all that kind to myself due to on-going criticism so perhaps it's that dark side of our human nature. I hope we can do better...eventually.
Imagine—self care as an essential, not a luxury! Love the line, “if you’re not fulfilled, you’re only able to see other people through the filter of your own needs.” Thank you.
If you have not read Val's memoir...definitely get it. In the Weather of the Heart. !! thanks for this post.

Has anyone ever told you what an excellent writer you are? ;)
Can't think of any questions, but I just want to say I love your writing!
I understand. I did it and felt good!
