Dear Val, I bet you look cool, calm and serene in your Lululemon shift!

Loved reading your face icing tips. When I was about 12 and fretting about my oily T-zone, my chic paternal grandmother recommended that I massage my face with ice cubes. My mother, who was a nurse, was horrified, sternly telling me that I could wind up with broken capillaries. So I switched to a drugstore product called Ice-o-derm (sp), which was basically a clear gel spiked with alcohol. Yikes!

I think if I had followed your tip to wrap the ice cubes in a cloth my skin would have fared better. This is actually something I’ve done for my cats over the years to cool them off when the weather turns sultry, and they’ve loved it!

For myself, I take my Avéne Thermal Spring Water out of the fridge and spray it all over my face, neck and chest.

If I didn’t already have a few broken capillaries, I would give your ice cube face bath a try. Sounds so refreshing!

Remember that scene in biopic “Mommie Dearest”’when Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford immerses her face in a bathroom sink filled with ice cubes? Apparently at one point Kate Moss was a fan of Crawford’s alleged icy morning ritual too.

Last but not least, hope your back is feeling better, and glad you’re enjoying your sojourn in Tokyo!

The ice massage sounds quite nice. I wonder what the lame mirror was supposed to be. Trick? Broken? Be careful in those moon bounce shoes!!

Thanks for yet another priceless article. I love the dress & crazy shoes, which I know must look super cool on. The two skincare reminders are very helpful (who knew? not me, obvs) but also very disturbing. Could this be why items like pillowcases washed in "unscented" laundry detergent are still irritating to my skin? That might be a rhetorical question.

"Unscented" versus "fragrance-free"... this is very important information!

Val! THIS essay is why I am a faithful fan and subscriber of HOW NOT TO F*CK UP YOUR FACE.

I always suspected icing would have a spectacular effect, and you and your research and your lemons in the ice-cube trays and your sources at the Cleveland Clinic, prove it. Gonna try it today!

I've done a hot water face steam in a bowl with eucalyptus, but I haven't tried the ice massage. That sounds way better right about now.

So interesting to hear on the ground beauty reports from the beautiful country of Japan.

That is fantastic! Haha. So rich...they left off the accent, the sparkle, and provided you with the perfect metaphor for your raison d'etre. I am so glad you are there with that little spark, the truly Divine Miss M! She is clearly enrapturing you in her spell. xx

Val!! You are out-cooling me in so many ways. Those shoes are so trendy I could never pull them off…unless you think they’d look good sliding into a minivan. Also, it’s so hot here in CT that our ice maker is empty by lunch. Maybe I’ll get one of those plastic bags from the gas station and roll my face over it before I start the day. Or I fill a bowl with green tea cubes and make it a twofer by drinking the stuff. Literally, insanely cool.

Hi Val, I have a question for you.

I'm 56 and am still having irregular menses, in varying degrees of months apart. My body temperature has changed, sleep habits, and so on. Typical stuff. All of this for 10 years now but the trade-off, I figure, is that my skin and hair still look amazing. I'm not taking anything for these symptoms except Tumeric, Moringa, and Omega-3. I never eat fast food, I cook clean, organic, fiber-filled meals for myself 99% of the time, drink lots of water, practice yoga, walk every day, wash my face twice a day, moisturize, only use foundation maybe once a month, yada yada yada. AND recently I've been getting acne on my chin. Not small pimples but large hard painful little mounds that never form a white top. According to Chinese medicine, the chin has to do with gynecological issues.

So here's the question: Any tips for how to minimize or avoid this acne on the chin? I've kicked up my usage of charcoal masks and then use benzoil peroxide when they appear but honestly, it can take a week or longer for it to back off. They hurt and look awful. Help!! Thanks, Jan
