As you read this, I plan to be frolicking in the Pacific with my family (arriving from Japan) on Hawaii’s Big Island. Whoever suggested Hawaii as a midway point between Tokyo and New York City needs a geography lesson; on the other hand, our actual midway point in the U.S. is Anchorage, Alaska, where I imagine the waters are far less conducive to the frolicking I’m hoping for.

Apropos of nothing, I found this photo of a red-legged seriema who appears to have mastered the art of makeup. The flirty lashes, the pastel shadow, the blushing beak! Ain’t Mother Nature grand?

Speaking of… grooming: Cleaning up my brows the other day, I was reminded of an oddball question I received at O, The Oprah Magazine from a reader who sneezed almost every time she tweezed. Not so weird, it turned out.
I called oculofacial plastic surgeon Cynthia Boxrud, MD, on the off chance she’d have an answer and what do you know, she just so happened to have spent a year researching a paper on medial brow anatomy. Our facial nerves include the trigeminal, she explained, which has a branch that extends from the brow down into the tip of the nose. Sometimes, plucking your eyebrows stimulates the nerve. Bless you!
