Sun-Protect Your Precious Crown
without grease or goo
Welcome readers, old and new!
Please tap that ❤️ above before you read a heartwarming story about going Dutch.
By now all you summer sun lovers have surely heard about the first new active sunscreen ingredient available in the U.S. since the 1990s: Bemotrizinol, used for years in Europe and Asia, provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays, has low levels of absorption through the skin and greater photostability (meaning it doesn’t need to be reapplied as often), and doesn’t leave the chalky residue some mineral sunscreens can.
In other words: It offers better protection and feels lighter. Look for the brand Parsol Shield in the coming months.
That’s the good news.
Less good news comes from dermatologist Laurel Geraghty, MD, on the state of tanning.
I’m so upset that dermatologists and science are losing to social media trends. We’re losing the messaging about sunscreen causing cancer (the opposite is true), that sunscreen is “toxic” (it’s an important tool for skin health), and that a tan looks “healthy” (a tan, by definition, is skin damage). It seems people would rather be tan for whatever aesthetic they’re going for and happily risk the cancers/spots/sagging/aging they will experience later as a result. The consequence of this behavior is not the kind of job security I want!
