TikTok evidently now has a whadayacallit that lets you scan your face and then have the app match you with another person who looks almost exactly like you. I don’t recommend scanning your face on TikTok or any other app (except for Global Entry) but twinning is a fascinating idea, don’t you think? There’s an interesting study debunking the notion that long-married couples grow to look more alike, but seems to confirm that we choose mates who generally look like us (listen to my conversation with Steve Dayan, MD, for more on this).

An inadvertent twinning situation occurred last week when I met my friend (and HNTFUYF muse), L, at Moynihan Station in New York City for a short trip to Philadelphia. We were going to check out the TOAST store there, as it offers “archived” styles at deep discounts. I’m not a big shopper, but a train excursion to a city I don’t often visit with L promised a lovely break from, well, everything.

When I found her at the station, she was easy to recognize: We were wearing the same blue-and-black checkered midi-length skirt. At the last minute, I’d swapped my white top for a black one—fortunate, as she was wearing a white blouse, which would’ve made our choices look even more deliberate.

“We’re invisible,” said L. “Who’s going to notice us?”

Before I could agree, a woman about our age swung by, gesturing to our skirts. “Cute!” she said.

I don’t have a photo of the skirt, but you can see the linen sundress (with good pockets) I grabbed—price slashed by about 70%—in the photo below.
